Overview & Training Cert Numbers
On June 2, 2014, Ontel Security Services, Inc. launched the Ontel Training Center. Our training center provides BSIS** approved training for anyone who wants to start a career in security or is an established security guard and needs to maintain their qualifications.
We offer the full set of basic Guard Card courses required by BSIS to qualify for a guard certification. These include:
Class 1 – A. Powers to Arrest & B. Appropriate Use of Force (8 hours) – $70.00
This is the first mandatory class to be completed prior to submitting your application to apply for your California Guard Card.
- Powers to Arrest – 3 hours Objective: To familiarize and instruct the individual on the training topics delineated at Business and Professions Code section 7583.7, including, without limitation, legal aspects, techniques, liability, and company requirements relating to the arrest of an individual. The training will utilize the Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force Training Manual, dated July 2023, and may include lectures, discussion, exercises, and role-playing.
- Appropriate Use of Force – 5 Hours Objective: For the purposes of this section, “in-person” means training conducted through traditional classroom instruction as defined in at Business and Professions Code section 7583.7, including, without limitation, legal aspects, techniques, liability, and company requirements relating to the arrest of an individual. The training will utilize the Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force Training Manual, dated July 2023, and may include lectures, discussion, exercises, and role-playing.
- Individuals required to take the Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force Training shall take and pass an examination as provided in the Manual with a score of 100% in order to successfully complete said training.
In addition, you will have to submit to a fingerprint background check (done off-site).
We also offer courses for the required 32 hours of additional training for new security officers. 16 hours needs to be completed within 30 days of your certification and the other 16 hours within 6 months*. These courses instill the skills needed for this line of work. Topics covered range from effective report writing to customer service matters, and communication styles to environmental awareness.
*Guard Card Additional 32 Hour of Security Officer Skills Training (Pursuant to Sections 7583.6 & 7583.6(b) of the Business and Professions Code Effective July 1, 2004)
BSIS requires you to complete the thirty-two (32) hours of training in security officer skills which must be completed within the first six (6) months of registration: 16 hours of training within 30 days from the date the registration card is issued and another 16 hours of training within 6 months from the date the registration card is issued.
Class 2 & 3: II.A Public Relations (Community & Customers) (4 hours) & II.B Observation & Documentation (4 hours) – $70.00
Class 4 & 5: II.C Communication and its Significance (4 hours) & II.D Liability / Legal Aspects (4 hours) – $70.00
The additional 16 hours can be taken as online elective classes (which we can direct you to) or can be made up of the following Additional Certification (elective) classes which we do offer. These can greatly increase your effectiveness and marketability by giving you skills and options beyond that of the basic security officer. These include:
- Chem Certification Only (4 hours) – $100.00
- Baton Certification Only (8 hours) – $185.00
- Handcuffing and Take-Down (4 hours) – $70.00
- Exposed Firearm (12 hours) – $190.00
- Exposed Firearm Re-qualification (this is required every 6 months to keep an exposed firearm permit compliant) (2 hours) – $95.00
- Taser (4 hours) – $160.00

Although space is limited in the parking lot, there is plenty of parking on the street. We are only blocks away from several places to eat, but you are welcome to bring your own food and beverages.
ONTEL SECURITY TRAINING CENTER PAYMENT POLICY
- Prior to paying for any classes, please contact the class coordinator at the office to provide additional student information to complete your registration more quickly and to confirm enrollment. Students must review the training calendar below.
- Ontel Security Training Center requires that all classes are PREPAID-IN-FULL two business days BEFORE the class date. Class rosters and materials are created based upon the number of customers registered for a class two (2) business days before the class date.
- Example 1: If the class is on a Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, then the payment MUST be received by 4:30 PM on the Thursday before the class.
B. Example 2: If the class is on a Wednesday, then the payment MUST be received by 4:30 PM on the Monday before the class. - Payments using Debit or Credit cards MUST be done online using PayPal. Payments can be made in person at 2125 Wylie Drive Suite 11 in Modesto using Cash or Money Order ONLY. The office is open to accept Cash or Money Order payments Monday to Friday, from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM (excluding holidays).
- Payments are NON-REFUNDABLE. Those who fail to come, or are late to class, will not get a refund. So please make sure to come to class and arrive On Time.
- Anyone submitting a late payment or who comes to a class as a last minute walk-in will not be guaranteed a seat.
- If a class is canceled by Ontel Security Training Center, the customer may choose to have the payment refunded, or kept as a credit toward a later class offering.
By submitting a payment to attend a class, you have accepted the terms and conditions of the Payment Policy.
In order to sign up for a class, please contact the Ontel Office during business hours to inquire about class dates, registration, and submitting payment. Online payment portals are temporarily unavailable.
